Dry fire training is an essential tool for operators. Dry fire training should take up about 85-90% of your training. The remainder is spent doing live fire which is basically getting used to noise, trigger squeeze and positions. The best part, almost all of your dry fire can be done in the comforts of your own home. Start with the basics, make sure your weapons are clear and ammo is far away from your magazines. Some excellent drills to do on a weekly basis to improve your over all skills are-
Drawing your pistol. Start with your weapon in your holster and hands at your side[a shot timer app works great]. Then start slow and draw and aim at a random target. Than reholster. Start slow and go faster with each rep until you fail. That is your goal.
Shoulder your rifle. Practice starting in the low and high ready and bring the rifle into your shoulder. Same steps apply.
Mag changes. Practice changing mags in different positions. Practice emergency reloads and tactical reloads.
Transitions. Start in low or high ready, shoulder weapon and transition to pistol and back again.
Shoulder transition. Practice switching shoulders with your rifle. You wont always be able to use your dominant side.
Target transition. Practice moving your weapon from object to object. Remember! Your weapon will always follow your eyes.
Mix it up! These are basic drills every person in a combat role should be doing weekly. Run these drills separate or together but remember to always train until you fail. Then you know what to work for next week. The only way to learn as to fail. If you want tips feel free to let me know and I can send videos, pics, or even video chat.
You are your 1st line of defense.
