A former FBI official found something he wasn’t supposed to see.

Dan Bongino claims he uncovered what he described as a “mother lode” of documents tied to Crossfire Hurricane, the FBI’s Trump–Russia investigation related to the 2016 election. The material was found inside a burn bag, typically used to destroy sensitive records.

He explained that what he found fundamentally changed his understanding of the investigation, and was concerned by how many people were involved but never spoke up.

His takeaway?

“I thought I knew Russiagate… It was like 10 times worse.”

“I’m reading this document, and I’m like, ‘I can’t believe this happened in the United States.’ It wasn’t just that it happened in the United States, it was that so many people knew about it,” he said. “All you had to do was read it. This thing was bulls— from the start.”

Bongino says the FBI isn’t a single entity but instead a split one that’s part functional, part compromised.

He expects retaliation, including the possibility of being targeted or even jailed over what he’s disclosed. Meanwhile, those at the center of the allegations remain untouched.

All this comes at a time when scrutiny of federal agencies is already elevated, with ongoing investigations, political pressure, and competing narratives about what actually happened during the 2016 election cycle.

Supporters see validation. Critics aren’t buying it. Either way, the core issue most likely isn’t going away.

Because if what Bongino is describing holds up, it raises a larger question, not just about one investigation, but about how decisions were made, who signed off, and why no one stepped in.
